God did give us a pattern for church in the New Testament. It was a participatory fellowship that met in homes with each believer building each other up. The lords supper was a full meal, not just a tiny cracker and a thimble of grape juice.

Where the church strayed was when it was legalized in the Roman Empire and everyone was herded into former temples and church became the building instead of the people.
