This started in the 90s for radio air play. Every label wanted their bands CDs mastered as loud as possible so that their songs sounded “better” on the radio. Now it is just standard procedure from mastering engineers even though there is no reason. Vinyl is better because they still usually master it to have good dynamic range, but that also depends on how they cut it and how much material they try to fit on an LP.
