This is avoidable if you follow best practices in any tick habitat. There's a chemical called permethrin that is basically a universal tick repellent. You can treat clothes with it.

I just keep a few cans of tick repellent knocking around my gear. Always spray down before I spend any extended amount of time outdoors.
