I assume they don't want to have too much liquidity locked. If it was forever they would end up with all their funds locked in channels and had to put more money for newer channels.

I'm just guessing, but I think it's to avoid dead money. Meaning, them adding liquidity to a wallet, but that wallet being inactive for years. Than liquidity would be sitting there, collecting dust.
