Who cares about decentralized video?

The open source community has tried several times to develop decentralized video streaming networks, but none of them have taken off yet.

This video compares the current state of YouTube against various decentralized options like nostr, BitTorrent, and Odysee.

No money was paid for the software involved in this video, including neural-network-based image, video, and audio generators. It's a demo of what can be done using today's tools with no budget.

Tools used include: Kdenlive; Whisk/Veo; MusicFX; pollo.ai; pixverse.ai; footage.com; klingai.com; the rogue digital assistant that lives in my tablet; several nostr clients and other things.

Looks like it worked this time :)

Reposted blind. Will watch in couple hours

IPFS with a torrent backup when?

Isn't it the simplest solution to put everything on a torrent and then have a highly compressed thumbnail version of the video so you can review videos in really low resolution and decide whether to download the full torrent, funding it with crypto micropayments or lightning payments? What's wrong with the video hosting or NOSTR? Because the video hosting on NOSTR seems very good. Can you try to explain the problem a little better?

Yeah.

I feel like this is the solution.

Some kind of torrenting system.

There is no video hosting on nostr.

There's a bunch of different media hosting platforms and services but none of them are actually on Nostr they are their own servers.

I'm 10 minutes into the first video here and I gotta stop to share this note because this feels like a really important discussion that needs to be had on here.

Everyone that's serious about nostr and decentralisation should watch this and think about it.

Primal has too many issues to list that they should fix.

If they're making a video viewing app they should just make it as its own app rather than adding more to primal.

Just make a tiktok/YouTube/xioahungshu clone as its own app instead of adding their Twitter clone.

That would help so much with onboarding new people.

But primal will never help towards solving decrentalisation

Primal wants to be the nostr equivalent of legacy social media platforms.

Torrenting does seem like it would be the best way to make it work.

Really worth the watch.

Important discussion that really needs to be had.

All of the Devs on here need to watch this and think about it.

Thanks for the informative video. Are you the creator?

I am, thank you for enjoying 🫑

Really well made video.

Held my attention the entire time and I have brain rot attention span from using tiktok and YouTube shorts.

The narration and your choices of added clips and graphics was really good.

Thank you. The rogue AI that lives in my tablet thanks you as well

Replying to finish watching this later. Good job on the video.

Thank you πŸ€™

I like the conclusion very much! We need each other more than protocols!

Ever tampered with peertube? It's not perfect by any means, and it's hard to find servers with open registration. But it solves some pain points for grassroots/self hosters. Notably bandwidth, as it leverages webpeer. It leverages activitypub for social features, but is a plugin away from being able to do the same with nostr.

I haven't tried peertube but have been interested in it. The "Extinction Rebellion" people use it, so it's gotta be worth something.

They should definitely add that nostr plugin though πŸ’―

I operate a small instance here: https://v.basspistol.org we're focused on Music, Arts and activism. We don't have the largest disk on earth, but decent bandwidth from a machine located in Switzerland. I feel like your videos could fit well there, so let me know if you want an account.

Bookmarked this to come back to if I decide to start using PeerTube πŸ™

That was a pretty solid video. Nice work, I definitely enjoyed it!

Great vid….i can’t zap u

Thank you, I don't have zaps set up because I like replies instead 🫑

That was interesting and worth thinking about. Not sure why there is a Community Warning on it though?

Apparently plebs app currently gives a community warning for anyone with no NIP-05

Ah! That makes sense! :)

Glad you enjoyed the video πŸ™
