No. XML was just the first human-readable interoperable standard for data. Before that, files were all binary and it was terribly difficult to understand their formats and fool proof their parsers.

I remember in the late 90s when folks were experimenting with sending data with HTML and XML, both children of SGML.
Still very difficult human-readable, though.
RSS is a sky island of the lost world of XML.
