If they're extremely surprised when you finally break down, it's because they've been trying to break your walls and eventually assumed there wasn't much, emotionally speaking, on the other side.
At any given moment a woman can decide that you are not enough and a man can decide that you're not worth effort.
None of this is actually exclusive to one sex.
People are essentially emotional, fragile, creatures born out of learned behaviors.
