Can someone make sure I understand NIP-05?

Instead of sharing my pubkey on Twitter, for example, I can share my nip-05 url. If someone wants to follow me on Nostr they can paste/type that into a client's search instead of the pubkey. The search (assuming the client supports nip05) will generate the same result as if I had pasted in my pubkey. Is this correct?

In theory, but when I search for a NIP-05 name in clients, it doesn’t find anything. I would really like to start using my NIP-05 name to share with people.

I’m finding the same thing. Searching the nip05 name is hit or miss. In iris I had better luck than Snort and damus. But the pubkey works the best.

It’s one of the things holding me back from bringing a few friends onto nostr. Giving a npub to them will be too unfamiliar.

Maybe a few seconds sign up with Iris would work for them?

Yes. Here're some details (based on Iris):

https://github.com/irislib/faq#username-nostr (how you can refer to users by linking or typing a URL)

You can also get an Iris username which is short and easy way to share a link to your nostr profile: https://github.com/irislib/faq#iris-username

Yes, I did figure out how to easily link to my profile, which is awesome. Feels much more like linking to my twitter profile (for example). And if I understand it correctly a person can navigate there and view it without setting a nostr key pair.

The rest of this is great information, thank you!

πŸ’― They get a profile key pair automatically without setting it up but if they just want to visit the link the key pair is not used in the future (unless the nsec is saved).

You can test by visiting a link (any link) when not logged in.
