It’s pretty wild that the fall of Byzantium, and therefore the last of Roman civilization, could be summed up as:

1. Cousins of Mongols called Turks came to Anatolia

2. Converted to Islam to help recruit soldiers

3. Knocked out Byzantines, then the former Byzantines said “we’ll take it from here, we’re the Ottomans now”

4. Mongol cousin dudes intermarry and are absorbed into the Anatolian Greek population

So ironic that the dudes who took down Byzantium aren’t even there anymore, and that it was effectively the same Byzantine dudes who then formed the Ottoman state, just with a new language and religion

One of the best docs I've seen on the final fall of the eastern Roman empire https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7AEOWa5__70

Points out at the end how Constantine the 11th went out like a pimp #MakeConstantinopleChristianAgain

Dude… It’s okay… you can say Turks we don’t bite. We are still kicking around. There are countries as Turkey, Turkmenistan. I heard the first time definition of “Cousins of Mongols called Turks” and it is a little bit ridiculous to use it second time after you “defined” Turks.
