If they've decided on death as the solution, they do in fact want to die. They often also want other people to feel guilty for their own problems.
Checking on mates is important, but if they make the choice to check out, that's on them.

They want to die because of the pain, not simply the act of dying. If there pain was not there, they'd surely prefer to live. I can't over generalize as I am much smarter than that, though, my position still remains the same.
