Well worth considering this tspe along with massaging 1st dim helps. Took about 2-3 months to adjust to a new grip.

Does this provide any benefits that straps wouldn't?
IMO, straps permit one to lift heavier but your grip strength will lag since your wrist is carrying the load. Switching from straps to hook grip you may end up deloading a bit before grip strenght develops.
Yup. Delaying straps as long as possible develops the grip and toughness of the hands. It's worth it.
