Bishop Irineu refused to offer pagan sacrifices, openly confessing his faith in Christ. For this, he was arrested and subjected to torture. He remained steadfast, declaring, "I worship Jesus Christ, and I offer sacrifice to Him in praise." When threatened with death, he replied, "Death for Christ is gain for me." He was then beheaded in 304 AD in Sirmium.
