#Lithium, the Irreplaceable Mineral, a thread.

Lithium is irreplaceable for the high-energy batteries that power electric vehicles. Lithium has a unique position on the periodic table, offering performance that cannot be replicated by other metals.

Lithium's high energy density also means fewer cells and a smaller footprint, which translates to lower costs for both vehicle and grid applications.

Lithium is essential for the energy transition.

It is estimated that a #GreenEconomy with 100% #ElectricVehicle adoption would result in a 30x jump in lithium demand!

As the demand continues to rise, will the world be able to provide the necessary supply of Lithium?

Here are a few of the countries that are leading the charge

1. Chile

Lithium reserves: 9,300,000 MT

Chile was the second biggest producer of lithium in 2022 at 39,000 metric tons. Chile holds most of the world’s “economically extractable” lithium reserves, the Salar de Atacama hosts ~37 percent of the world’s lithium reserve base.

2. Australia

Lithium reserves: 3,800,000 MT

Australia was the largest lithium-producing country in the world in 2022, however it comes in at a distant second in terms of #Lithium reserves.

The Greenbushes open pit mine has been producing lithium since 1985

3. Argentina

Lithium reserves: 2,700,000 MT

Argentina is the fourth largest lithium producer in the world, produced 6,200 MT in 2022.

Chile, Argentina and Bolivia comprise the “Lithium Triangle,” which host more than half of the world’s lithium reserves.

4. China

Lithium reserves: 2,000,000 MT

China holds lithium reserves of 2,000,000 MT, and last year it produced 19,000 MT.

China produces more than two-thirds of the world’s lithium-ion batteries and controls most of the world’s lithium-processing facilities.
