I think the issue is that they are afraid of ever touching romance again. Atelier Escha & Logy was an attempt to pivot to a broader audience, hell the story felt like the most generic JRPG ever and they even made an anime adaptation. That failed miserably as it didn't really increase sales at all. So now we are stuck with Yuri bait and shippers in the fanbase. Rorona and Sterk is so obvious, yet they refuse to at least knowledge that there is something going on between them.
Then they release Ryza trilogy and just because she has a big butt they break all sale records.
Interesting I didn't know that as I got kinda late on the series (around 2018). But I loved Atelier E&L so I can't get why the despise for it, maybe NISA fault for their Ayesha ENG dub ?

Most people hate it because of the way that the chapters were structured and for the insane use of brown colors in comparison to Ayesha. I'm not a big fan of E&L but I really like the characters in that game. It didn't sell poorly, it sold about the same as the other games in the franchise (before Ryza), it just didn't perform better even after all that marketing, that's the issue, they obviously spent a lot of money on marketing.
I like the entire dusk series. The dead world plot, good characters like Keithgriff, certified terrorist Ayesha. The pastel tones and Hidari art are a plus to me.
Mysterious series are so generic I can’t even finish the first game and I’ve been trying.
Atelier Ayesha will always have a special place in my heart. I like that game way too much. If anything, I don't understand why people hated Atelier Shallie. Mysterious is overall very bland, but unfortunately, Sophie is the Ryza of Japan. I'm pretty sure they will release Sophie 3.
I have all the mysterious series but I didn't touch yet. I'm still with the sweet and hyped taste from Dusk and Arland so may be harsh on the game

Well true lol it's kinda shock going from colorful Ayesha to brown E&L but the ruins and Geofront makeup for it.
So the issue was overspending with marketing.. truth is that Atelier will always be niche much like Ys and Legend of Heroes.
