bitcoin has always been public property - no one can own a number, the best you can do is keep it secret

Define ownership. A good working definition is exclusive control over a scarce resource. If you keep your number secret you have exclusive ownership over your Bitcoin.

You won't get that kind of ownership guarantee for land or cars. Stop paying taxes or insurance and see what happens.

lol. Intellectual property is a state construct - you can't "own" information, because anyone can potentially copy or independently create the same information without removing your access to it.

I'm talking about ownership in the legal sense. For example people who generate seeds with weak entropy find out pretty quickly that they do not own their private keys or control "their" bitcoin.
