By saying no, you leave yourself open to say yes to something even better, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
If someone comes to you as an investor, they have probably put a lot of effort into whatever they're wanting investment for, and you can tell.
They chose to be vulnerable with you when they decided to ask for an investment.
Your heart probably recognizes this, and wishes to reward their effort, even if your mind knows it's not a good idea for you to invest.

In this case I had a close friend reach out with a strong view to say no. For me to then ignore that warning and proceed is going to be too much

Can still be hard of you had been considering the investment, and need to change direction, but it also sounds relieving to have found out before you agreed to anything!
It also a case of opportunity cost, as you say, and just this week there is a family home that has come into my view as very attainable for me and might well work for us
So capital has value for one thing one minute, but the next you might want it for something else
