Bradley heavy duty snow tubes are bullet proof. My kids have been abusing ours for at least 6 years. And they are made with an actual truck inner tube, so it can be patched or replaced if needed.

Now we're talking. Can a 4-5 year old reasonably manage, or is he going to go flying?

You'd probably have to ride with him until he's got a long enough wingspan to reach two handles. Plus its pretty heavy to pull back up. It's better for 7+.
