It’s impossible to be 100% accurate but nostr.band is a good source of stats. It has numbers for total npubs but probably more useful are the active user stats.

take one major player like nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m and check his followers (250K+) and then go to nostrband and then take into account that there are bots here, many of them ...
