This makes me think about how I should really learn sign language AND braille. It should be a civic duty. What if I encounter a deaf person IRL, do I just go "Sorry man can't help ya"?

I know a handful of people who have learnt sign language, and they all loved the learning process. And the superpowers it gave them. The opportunity to use it comes up surprisingly frequently. Although that might just be because of industries you work in and stuff. But I see it a lot

By that token you should learn how to be a lifeguard, first aid, speak foreign languages, negotiate hostage situations, talk someone off a ledge...

Well if someone wants to teach all that , yeah cool.

I think self defense should be taught in schools , I'm amazed it isnt .

Exactly : it's your civic duty to jump the bridge on Quake 3 : Arena.
