This is why sometimes I just order take out and sit on the bench outside the restaurant and eat. Afrer tax and tips, it's a 30+% more. Insane.
Of course, sometimes the cashier taking the take out order expects tips. I'm like "you didn't do anything extra!!"
I've seen friends pay $2 tips at the register for a $4 cookie, just because the screen prompted it and they probably felt bad not to.
Tips came about in the US is because waiters used to get paid $2/hour, so they needed the customer to cover what restaurant owners should pay them. Tips is not a norm in many other countries.
