I suspect if my parents were around, I could have ended up in that state. There were unmarried white men at my job that were in their 40s that lived off their parents for all intents and purposes, and one of them was *never* going to get married as he was a bit too, um, awkward to keep a woman around for the long-term. The other was engaged, but his low income and pot friendly lifestyle was going to become an impediment to a functional *and* serious relationship.
If you're immune to social shaming by friends, family, and the rest of society, or you have low needs, it's easy to skate by. The minute that you want nice things, you'll have to start to working.
IOW, I could have stayed part-time, but if I wanted a nice shiny car, I'd have to work full time. And guess what happened...
