I believe "the grid" is intrinsically tied to the weakening of the magnetic field, south Atlantic anomaly and other electromagnetic phenomena... Imagine a scenario where unchecked progress creates techno civilizations that build massive world spanning electronic webs that weaken the natural defence mechanism of the planet to the intrusion of the sun... At some point the progress invites catastrophe from its prior benefactor, the sun...
