I think BIP-177 would help bitcoin adoption
Discussion
Why...
In my eyes this is all a publicity stunt, good wallets have already fixed all the issues listed in this article. And wallets displaying amounts with a decimal are going out of style
i hope they don't change it, what is wrong with using a second symbol for satoshis? it's already well established and even if your font doesn't have the proper version there is a japanese symbol that is basically the same
i think these people somehow think that it won't be confusing when it suddenly seems like prices in bitcoin are 100,000,000 larger than they thought, and they will think "what, i'm not paying ~ 1 million for a 1200B fucking price for a pastry
it's not gonna help anyone, whoever is doing this is just trying to interfere with adoption IMO
satoshis is fine, why change something that is already working
Speaking from the experiences I made in my circles/culture/language I think the word "bitcoin" is just easier to use and more well known already.
If I tell a nocoiner about a "Satoshi" they usually haven't heard of it before, and it feels kind of weird because its the name of a "Person" rather than a neutral thing. Sounding somewhat Asian makes it even worse for acceptance with more traditional folks as it feels a bit foreign.
Just my vibes, I don't think this will get changed tbh as its years too late, but it would be nice imo.
I find it very confusing because saying "ill send you 200 bitcoins" to mean "ill send you 200 sats" makes no sense. inside out bubble or event outside in the nocoiner world. the BTC price has solidly cemented in everyone mind how much one "bitcoin" is worth, which is why I think this is just a publicity stunt
I totally agree that it would be really confusing for existing bitcoiners, especially as not every exchange/wallet would adopt it. I don't think it has a real chance of happening either.
Although thinking from the perspective of a nocoiner, I imagine the benefits would outweigh the confusion due to the arguments above.
Maybe people like the word "sats" more than I think, idk, i just feel like sats is not a good name for a monetary unit, and bitcoin has good branding already.
The unit itself (the current sat) is great though.
RE the bitcoin price being cemented in everyone's head, my vibe is that 80% of the western civilization couldn't tell you if a bitcoin traded for 1k or 100k

Sats sound a lot like cents... Which is why it works and is recognizable.
I think it's fucking retarded and doesn't need a BIP. This is forcing a change. Sats are already the standard and we don't need a BIP. There is not BIP for an official Bitcoin symbol either but we all know it as :bitcoin:
This BIP is exactly like if I made a BIO that proposed that symbol but colored it yellow because I thought it would help adoption somehow.
I'm sick of seeing this shit now. It's beyond stupid.
