I still use the fediverse every day. it's not all mastodon and it's not all furries. the biggest difference for me is a sense of community. we care about who our admins are and they have no trouble reaching out for help when they encounter problems. instances also function like groups. I understand that the activitypub model suffers from weaknesses... I still don't get these kinds of feelings when I just publish my notes to a dozen relays. I don't give a fuck about who is running these relays. it feels too impersonal.

More power to you. Kinda get what you're describing: Tight knit communities vs resilient impersonal broadcasts?

I really like lemmy. Aside from all the commie nutjobs its a pretty cool place. Though they think downvoting me hurts my feelings, and it really doesn't.

which places in lemmy do you like? I'm still struggling with the "mastodon effect" of all the stuff that's easy to find being full of socialism and furries and garbage. except I did find out about monero.town.

Monero.town seems to not be federating properly to the best of my knowledge. I use lemmy.zip

on lemmy, how much more effort do you have to put in to avoid feeling like you logged into "ihaterepublicans.com" compared to something like r*ddit? I don't want to go in there and have every other post complaining about some stupid thing like that.

It's definitely not an easy task, that's for sure.

The same thing can be achieved by running a relay for private purposes with auth, no? It's more effort though, someone would need to host this.
