As I understand it they are shoving arbitrary data in the witness which is perfectly normal and made possible by the combination of SegWit and Taproot.
The extra weight in data is paid for by the creator via transaction fees. If they choose to inscribe the data and pay the tx fee then that is in itself the definition of a "monetary transaction"... I can't make it more clear than that for you. They are spending sats to send data on The Blockchain. You just don't like the data they are sending.
You can just opt out and not view the bitcoin through the Ordinals lens if you don't like them. Like managing your relays on nostr to filter out shitty content of which there is lots of.
High fee environments are great for all bitcoiners IF you get your shit together and manage your UTXOs accordingly and use lightning. If you can't cope with tx fees during the next Inscriptions craze then you're not going to survive global adoption.
