We start to absorb the dialect style that we consume. For example, if someone reads a ton of “fear and loathing in las vegas” they will start to process language in the same manner as the characters were written.

On a side note, To me it’s worth $40k+ to be able to learn effective fluency in Spanish. Which would be my most expensive purchase next to a house and car.

I remember reading A Clockwork Orange for the first time and I felt something similar. The gang in the story uses heavy street slang, which is uninelligible at the start. After a few chapters of immersion in context, you become fluent and I found bits starting to slip into my own vernacular.

It's a testament to our amazing brain's ability to adapt. But, it is also cautionary, as we are always absorbing, even unconsciously.
