So this should be a wood chip path this is 3inches after a year. Going to have to bulk it up

Did you use cardboard under the chips?
Negative, only the compost.
It will make a big difference if you start with a cardboard layer. But only for about a year. After that weeds can start being a problem. Finding cardboard without tape and stickers is a challenge. I hear appliance stores may be a good source...
Second the cardboard anywhere you don’t want growth last a few years I use it for my fence line hate pulling weeds
