Access to water is also (according to many) a right. Not everything that exists has to be about the same right.

If supporting something (not just a human right) comes as a package deal with supporting other things, the amount of people willing to support it will be smaller and both things will have fewer supporters.

My point was that, in my view, the ecosystem would be better if non-economic incentives, of the kind that have been proven to be very successful in the free and open source software environment, were valued more as sufficient motivations within Nostr.

Running a relay wouldn't be very expensive, compared to many other activities performed by nonprofits, but it would obviously have some cost. And yes, as I mentioned, accepting donations in multiple forms will widen the range of donors.

Donations don't have to be trough Nostr-related features (the org could be about free speech in general, such as many existing orgs are, and have the relay as a minor activity) and, contrary to what it seems to be a common opinion, in my view there wouldn't need to be a positive margin (i.e. profit) made by running relays.

Orgs such as FIRE and the Human Rights Foundation are among those that could reasonably have a Nostr relay as one of their activities.

Ideally, there would be several in different jurisdictions.
