High risk to use a single drive solution, especially one that doesn't have it's own power supply

True, had a UPS but the SSD just died. SCB saved the funds but force closures were pretty expensive. Raid would have prevented this

Yeah one of the problems is that the Raspberry Pi's USB ports don't have enough power to support constant running drives, so even if your power doesn't go out, the Pi's USB port can fail to have enough juice.

I'm a huge fan of this drive enclosure that I'm using with my Raspberry Pi. It has a seperate power supply, hardware RAID, while still outputting USB compatible with the Pi. Also it increases speed of read / write greatly when distributed across multiple SSDs
