GM! It has been a long time since I have had to formally apply for a job but I have had a little experience selecting candidates to interview in the past.

As general advice, I would say to be honest about why you are transitioning fields, highlight any qualifications you have attained for the new field and how any past experience can be of benefit with the new field. I would keep it fairly brief but make sure it addresses the role you are applying for. The cover letter gives a feel for who you are and why you may be suitable for the role. Enough to keep whoever is reading it interested to then look at the resume and arrange an interview.
