At some point you will want to move some funds, and if you reveal your seed phrase to a compromised computer or device, they would be drained almost immediately.

So compared to the process (and cost) of creating your own secure environment to perform a transaction, a hardware wallet is convenient, cheap, and reasonably secure.

A DIY hardware wallet seems to be the best idea however.
