I hear you and I would fully agree if the context is a small town where the better alternative activities can be done. For most of today's larger cities–no farmlands, no railroads, no water spaces–the alternative is staying home Netflix & Chill while gaining weight and dying slowly.

Finding a good time where gym is empty, lifting without machines, and doing free exercises helped me not only get in shape but also restored my ability to focus and work.

The ultimate solution however is to move the fuck out of here and live somewhere close to the nature.
