It's going to compete with Bluesky, slightly, but it's more for Facebook and Instagram users, IMO. I don't think it will be successful.

After using it for 30 minutes, I have a hard time imagining FB or IG users will use threads religiously if at all. I'm more bullish on Bluesky than Threads. Threads certainly won't usurp Twitter as the default public square for thought.

For those folks that enjoy restrictions and toxic relationships or who are constantly looking for hate speech, yes, it will be there for them..
