It’s no surprise here that John Oliver just parroted what he was told to say. The bulk of the segment was written by Molly White, who is very open about her bias against Bitcoin/Crypto.
It’s hard to blame people who aren’t involved in bitcoin to see it all as one thing. Crypto con artists have raised untold sums of cash from VCs and uninformed speculators to confuse everyone, shill their worthless fraud tokens, and disparage bitcoin in the process, because there’s no one except us to call bullshit on them.
I watched 8 minutes of this and actually enjoyed it. If someone brings it up it opens the door to immediately start the conversation of “yes, the cryptocurrency industry is a scam, here’s why bitcoin is different.”
maybe they will never know and just place their trust into an “index” of sorts
Outside of bitcoin, that would have been the better path.
After the ICO bubble of 2017-2018, I thought for sure that was it. I thought there’s no way people would fall for that garbage again. Then we got all the DeFi and NFT garbage of 2021.
So while I would love to think the world is ready to skip directly to #Bitcoin only, the evidence suggests the contrary. I predict that in 2025 we’ll have a raft of new scams, bigger and more devastating than before.
Now that’s a prediction you can take to the bank. Just hope that bank doesn’t collapse!
