Did the scammers make a mistake or something? How would that even work?

There's a known vulnerability in Telegram which allows users ip addresses to be leaked during a phone call. I'm working on the script that I found, but it's beyond my current capability. Once an ip address is found we have a route to finding who it was and can bring a suit against them.
Fair enough. Maybe they are too greedy to use any of their scammed money on a VPN.
It’s the default behavior, not a bug. Signal is the same way by default and you must change a setting for it to hide your ip on calls by routing through them, which it says will degrade call quality but I haven’t noticed. Don’t know if telegram gives that option
Yep, that's why I use a VPN with Signal.
