Sphinx is open source. I understand for each message you send it is sending a lightning payment to the person you are chating with. So the message is a description of a payment. Encrypted like all lightning payments. I guess that is quite good security for non-military use. Both people chating must be running their own lightning nodes.

This is not about convenience. You must have a pretty strong motivation for security.
