I don't think most Linux Distros have the equivalent of "Preparing to configure Windows" (1hr+ so far)* or "Optimizing Your Device" or a ridiculous, meaningless, update progress bar. I am taking such messages from devices on faith much in the way that people in Idiocracy think Brawndo is what plants crave†.

* In fairness it's in a KVM instance, but it's really not badly specified. What I object to is the lack of transparency. It needs a button I can click to show me what it's actually doing - like 'tail -f logfile'. Otherwise I'm tempted to believe there's just a timer as a kind of sadistic mass practical joke. It's getting towards the compile time of a huge application. Windows Update - so thorough it takes approximately the same time as recompiling Windows.

† Idiocracy is deeply flawed, but good, much like The Marching Morons was deeply flawed but good. The Little Black Bag would make a better screen adaption. I wonder if Mike Judge drinks Smart Water with a wry smile.
