What is the right way to hodl in cold storage? I want to shift from my ledger hardware wallet to coldcard. Is that by itself sufficient? Or are there additional steps that I must take (verification, security, etc)?

It depends on what level of depth you want to ! You can create on your hardware wallet from scratch or use software wallets like electrum. I am surprised you use ledger .
