US intelligence agencies have issued a warning about domestic extremism ahead of the 2024 election. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security report that conspiracy theories surrounding election fraud pose a significant threat to violence, targeting officials, candidates, and voting sites. The bulletin highlights Maricopa County, Arizona as a key location at risk.
The report notes that perceptions of election fraud are a prominent narrative for extremists, while other motivations include immigration, LGBTQ issues, abortion, and failed assassination attempts on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Since the 2021 Capitol Hill riot, at least three attacks and two interrupted plots have stemmed from baseless fraud claims.
