Speaking for myself a couple of years ago I was opening lightning channels to anyone and they were on average quite small channels. Now I'm very picky and only open if its a good option for me.

I think most people need less than 10 channels to have a good lightning experience, even as low as 3-5.

People who are trying to turn a profit / be a routing node / run for a hobby, will likely run significantly more.
