Can someone pls explain (or preferably, link to an explanation of) how Zap events and amounts are logged in #Damus?

Sometimes I see zaps and corresponding amounts, which later disappear. I presume that is due to LN payment failures? Do Damus or other clients post these as “zaps” before the payment is complete?
