In all honesty, the market for actual music seems pretty small right now. Most folks seem pretty uncritical when it comes to listening. Background noises.

However, I’m also very much into niche lifestyle choices so it will remain a constant here.

I agree, but also think/hope it is an unmet need in people. Maybe it is just that there is so much low quality, ignorable music out there, people just don’t invest in it in the same way. But I’ve seen with giving my kids access to the whole Spotify catalogue, they have ended up reaching back into the past and listening to older music that I also like, but haven’t pushed on them at all. This makes me happy that we can bond over music I like, but also sad for them that it seems like they don’t have generational records/sounds of their own. The people in the family most knowledgeable or invested in current chart music are the grandparents- it makes no sense!

Early 80s records are like a teleport back to my childhood for me now. But what sounds will do that for them? The endless Ed Sheeran shit we hear playing in the shops?🤷‍♂️

I agree todays generation are way less concerned about release date and are as happy checking James Brown and The Stooges as anything new, that is a plus. I know lots of very good young musicians too.

The model now is very different. I’ve made a living in music for 25 years now, either teaching or involved in the process as an engineer etc.

I’m very hopeful about the future but think we have to cut a new path somehow. Spotify, by there own words, value music at zero, personally I find art to too fundamental to the soul for such a valuation.

Well done for making a living at it for 25 years, that’s not easy. I’ve seen so many good musicians either walk away from it or not make much to live on and have to compromise on things etc.

I agree there are a lot of talented youngsters still learning to play - and they are really good! I just hope that the Bitcoin effect could be to allow some of the older generation musicians to be able to support viable live venues or studios to help guide and produce the talent coming through.

I hear the term ‘generational wealth’ thrown about on podcasts and it is like they mean ‘sit on it forever, Laura, so my great-grandkids will think I was a fucking genius’, but I think generational wealth really should mean ‘wealth that generates something’, including great-grandkids too of course.

Yeah ‘generational wealth’ is an alien concept to me, I’ve no kids and I certainly fall into the category of people who’ve sacrificed a lot in able to do something they love and I’m pretty broke to be honest but, along with my business partner, we can sustain ourselves for at least a year while developing a new space and I know some great, young creative people. The future is what we make it.

I guess some people just want to hoard and die it seems. I’ve maybe 30 years left on this planet and I intend to do something useful in that time.

I mean I can totally understand doing the best by your kids but leaving them massive amounts of money doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll do something good. They might just spend it on cocaine and hookers and unless you become president, they won’t be pardoned…

Absolutely, the future is what we make it, and we can only ever control our own actions.

I’m similarly thinking to myself recently, what am I going to do with my hopefully 30 useful years left.

I’ve got about a nine month runway carved out left for myself to help try to make something out of value for value music on Bitcoin.
