Discord promised us ownership of our groups. It is all over their wording like "Create your Server" and such.
The reality?
They run your server and they can shut it down at will.
It turns out that discord controls just about everything from users to data and integrations. It's the usual closed platform with minimal twists to make it seem like it's "yours". The usual fiat mentality of minimum effort short-term, traded for lock-in longterm.
We want better. We want:
1. Open-source
2. Easy-to-run
3. Portability guarantees: standardized data formats signed with sovereign identites. In one word: Nostr
