Is it common knowledge how writers choose a pen name (an assumed name used by a writer instead of their real name) aka nym? Have you heard of a standard formula to use or do you think it’s arbitrary?

The formula that I was told is to use the name of your first pet plus your mother’s maiden name ✨
I’ve tried out more than one pen name over the years. Never used a formula. The first one I used was a first name I was almost named but with the spelling a high school boyfriend used. The last name was the first name of a friend who died when we were barely 17.
It’s a shame I’ve never been inclined to be a porn star. I’ve known what stage name I’d use for that for ages. Mona Lotts. Maybe I’ll use it if I ever write some spicy romances.
