House, Senate leaders nearing deal on landmark online privacy bill

==========

The leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Commerce Committee, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), respectively, are expected to announce a tentative deal on a national framework for protecting Americans' personal data online. The deal is expected to preempt state data protection laws and allow individuals to sue companies that violate their privacy. Lawmakers have been trying to pass a federal privacy law for over two decades, but negotiations have repeatedly broken down. The deal would mark the first time the heads of the two powerful commerce committees have come to terms on a major consumer privacy bill. The details of the framework are not yet known, and its passage in both chambers of Congress is not guaranteed.
