This a big reason why the USA is in decay. Cost cutting looks great on paper until it comes back to bankrupt the person or corporation. Usually a vicious cycle too which applies to all aspects of everyday life. Houses, cars, clothes, furniture etc etc

Have you been to a furniture store lately? It’s fucking depressing

Yeah it’s all garbage. I have a hand-me-down couch from my grandpa and everything else I’ve sourced used. Mid century hard wood is my preference. New stuff is straight fiat trash. Literally just trash that can maybe last a year before it gets put in its rightful place in the dump. Sad stuff.

I’ll never understand why the trend is to cut costs at the expense of a viable product long-term. It’s organizational suicide to get at slight short-term profit increases. Makes no sense if you want to survive for years.

But beyond that, it’s just bad form to offer something that isn’t a good product. The goal should quality goods / services and a sustainable (solvent) business model.

I'm with you on classic hardwood. My dining table and chairs are older than my late grandmother, and they'll likely outlast me (may reupholster again).

But I think marketing ("express this weeks' authentic you!" says #influencer) and frequent house-moving is why disposable furniture dominates. Can't really judge people in the second category.

I'm ambivalent about this societal pathology personally - it /does/ let me buy classics for less than new IKEA would ;-)

Exactly. Which brings even more decay and vicious cycle of never ending consumption

I’d love to see fast food, fast fashion and 95% of garbage consumer goods fail tbh. It’s peak fiat. Localism is so much more accretive and healthy.

I would, too.

The current (connected and mutually-reinforcing) trends of increasing (and increasingly globalised) regulation; corporate globalisation, consolidation and monopolization; and globalised state violence have immense cultural momentum behind them.

Not much runway remaining, but the crash process may be drawn-out... :-/
