Global identity and single sign on is very useful imho. Relays are a good way to get a working system going. Unclear how well that scales. Our best relay had to nuke itself in less than a year, with 10k DAU. Other architectures can handle much more than this.

Yep. Self-generated identifiers and self-signed events are the core. Everything else (including relays) is a matter of engineering.
