I'm not sure either. Forking social posts seems almost pointless. But maybe I'm missing something?

Care to explain in English ?
In Amethyst there is a new button when you click the repost button
Ha. That's actually the main issue. Only developers know what "forking" is.
Basically a fork is when you make a complete copy of someone else's work (in this case a note) modify it slightly and republish it as your own.
It keeps the link back to the original note though so everyone can see where it came from
I can see how it might be useful for things like Wikipedia articles. But I don't know what's the point of having it on social posts
I guess it would be useful if you don't want the person who posted it to get smacked with all your followers replies/notifications? If that's what it does? Haven't quite figured it out yet 🤔
It's a community note or reaction, rather than a reply. Replies are less aggressive because they are part of a larger discussion.
Forking is great for nagging and trolling. "This npub would like you to change your note to..."
And if they merge it, it's an overt and public act of submission, so that's very satisfying.
It doesn't even have to be mergeable. They don't even have to see it, for it to be fun. You could just write "You might want to switch out this photo for one that isn't ugly." on some girl's selfie and have a laugh with your followers. Like graffiti.
The process is the punishment.
