Hung out with my brother and made our first batch of biochar yesterday. Ended up with over 7 cubic feet which is over $200 if you buy it from home depot. I took a small amount and put it in these burlap coffee bags I got for free and made a filter for a pond I have. The hypothesis there is to steal nutrients that is feeding the duckweed problem and passively charge the biochar for usage next year.

I also made my first batch of biochar inspired by nostr:npub15879mltlln6k8jy32k6xvagmtqx3zhsndchcey8gjyectwldk88sq5kv0n last fall. I dug a 12 foot trench with angled sides to burn a fence that fell down. I wanted to thin my woods and built a fence, should have just made biochar with it. I got 6 five gallon buckets of good char and a couple more that had a good mix of dirt and char.

These got layered in my chicken coop over winter as I added leaves bagged by city folk. As soon as it is warm enough to camp on my land, I'll build some bioreactors from Jack's course because I'll need to water them.

Sounds great, how'd you charge them

Mostly by mixing into my chicken bedding that will be composted, so its charging now. The compost won't be used until next year. I want a fungal compost to help establish trees and shrubs, so I'm doing the Johnson-Su inspired method adapted by Jack Spirko

The char that I mixed into my potting soil mix I just soaked it in kelp meal and water for a day. Seemed to work well in last years potting mix with store bought char.

Feed that duckweed to the pigs! Look up the nutrient profile, it’s awesome.
