I'm not American, so I don't have a horse in the race.
From my foreign understanding, the electoral college aligns better with the philosophy of a Republic better than the philosophy of a Democracy.
Without the electoral college, the popular vote would win each time, which would create an imbalance withing the Republic, where the denser populated states would have more power.
At least, that's how I understand it.
Yeah so America is not a democracy it is a republic.

Exactly. I'd double check on my explanation, as I may be wrong, but I think it's close enough.
As someone who lives in a democracy, I think I prefer the republic model. I think it has better checks and balances in the distribution of power.
